Ummmm….EVERYONE needs history! Something that’s been eating away at me lately is how little people know of actual history, especially when it comes to the history of the United States. We’ve all been fed so many things and it makes things so murky! Want to know what’s sad? I’m going to be honest here… I just started our school year a week ago and have already learned so much about the Pilgrims and our history as a nation that I didn’t know before! Either I NEVER payed attention or public school taught me almost NOTHING! I’m all like, “WOW this person was essential!” and like, “THAT HAPPENED???!!!!!” You guys, I’m probably just real stupid, but I can’t be the only homeschool mom to go through this! One thing I love about homeschooling is how we get to learn together, but dang, I didn’t think I’d be learning SO much when my kids were still at such a young age!
Ok, but seriously, the importance of history though!!!!!! Without knowledge of LEGIT history our nation will continue to fall. I truly believe that one of the main reasons why our nation is where it’s at is because of lack of knowledge and why this country happened in the first place. The last thing I want is for my children to get some watered down version of history and end up having no idea. I want them to be armed with knowledge in order to fight to keep our freedoms. It should be basic knowledge that the failure to know TRUE history will be the ruler of our nation’s demise,
I have two older brothers, and while my parents were AMAZING, it was my two older brothers that shoved the constitution down my throat. MY GOSH, HOW THAT ANNOYED ME!!!!! Looking back now, I get it and appreciate them so much! Also, without my brothers I’m not sure I’d be a Christian right now. Anyway, I didn’t see or feel the importance of it all as a kid and I don’t want that for my kids. During our read aloud time we are going through the book Pilgrim Adventures from the My Father’s World curriculum. It’s pretty intense, but SO crucial! It has caused some awesome conversations and tears of compassion and understanding.
I know there is a lot of controversy about the start of our country, especially when it comes to the Native Americans. Those have been some awkward and tough conversations! I know I must teach all of it and not be one-sided. However, I have a feeling this is going to my favorite grade!
